NYSUM (New York School of Urban Ministry) July 28- Aug4, 2012
Bright and early Saturday morning 6 individuals from Sarnia, Wallaceburg and Strathroy began the long ride to NYC. The group ranged in ages from 16-70 (including the 16th birthday celebration on the Sunday). New friendships were quickly formed.
While in NY our home for the week was the New York School of Urban Ministry in Queens. NYSUM has been reaching out to the less fortunate and lost in NYC for over 25 years. Teams are sent out where the need is and work alongside established organizations. As is normal, the week is spent using our serving hearts in a range of ministries. The first day we sorted clothes in a large World Vision Warehouse in the Bronx. Monday evening an outing to a Cerebral Palsy hospital required that we share God’s love through our smiles and singing. On two difference days, the team helped serve meals at St. John’s Bread and Life and St. Paul’s House in Manhattan. Another favourite ministry is spending a couple of hours in the evening visiting patients/residents at Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island, lending an ear and showing compassion. One of the outreaches that starts out being a little intimidating for new team members; but, ends up being a favourite is the H.O.M.E. ministry. The team goes out to the streets and meets individuals where the need is, and we share the love of God through a smile, conversation, sandwich, drink and a package of toiletries and most often prayer.
Our last ministry of the week, again a favourite, was the Relief Bus. This is a soup kitchen on wheels! Team members took turns serving soup and drinks, and mingling with the guests on the street.
We go in the power of the Holy Spirit and covet our “home teams” prayers while we are gone. This year was a “new” for Mary Anne Richie, our leader. She graduated to driving the NYSUM, 15 passenger van,on the busy streets of Manhattan!! God is our good protector!
NYSUM continues their work in the streets of NYC, most recently helping those whose lives were torn apart by Hurricane Sandy. Information can be found at nysum.org. Presently they have a special appeal to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
